such is now the necessity is the final in a trio of pieces concerned with repetition and vocality, the previous two including within the magnification of transience and light (2020) and pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design (2017). The piece was written as part of Loadbang Ensemble’s initiative Plays Well With Others, in which the adventurous quartet (Adrian Sandi [bass clarinet], Andy Kozar [trumpet], Jeffrey Gavett [baritone voice], William Lang [trombone]) joined forces with a string ensemble.

such is now the necessity has much in common with its sister piece, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design written for the string trio forty/sixty, in that it draws from much of the same motivic material at the outset of the piece. The individual string parts of twelve-member chamber group are written for individually, so that single phrases may cascade about the ensemble, until eventually aligning with the four members of Loadbang.

The piece was premiered February 2020 in Albuquerque, NM at Chatter and was performed and recorded the subsequent week at the Hebrew Tabernacle of Washington Heights.
